The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio – Author Mark Steckler-  This presentation will be on Mark’s book, The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio. The book focuses on the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. 

February 19th 

The History of No. 19 – Glenn Holland- Hear the history of our No. 19 steam locomotive from Glenn as he tells the storied history of No. 19.

March 19th 

The Railroad Infrastructure Cyclopedia –  Chris Schulte – Join Chris as he presents his book and shares insights from his guide on tracks, structures, signaling, and related fields. This book takes readers on a defining journey from the era of animal-drawn tramways to the age of high-speed rail, offering an in-depth exploration of the rich history and cutting-edge advancements that have shaped North America’s railroads.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum’s Fall Steam Festival: Trains, Tractors & Traditions is an event to relive some of the most fondly remembered aspects of historic Americana: steam machines, base ball, and hot dogs. Guests can watch base ball played as it was in the old days, in empty fields, with little more equipment than what you and your friends could sling over your shoulders. We will have JD’s Hot Dogs here, selling hot dogs and other fare to guests. 

Apart from base ball, various steam tractor operators will be present to showcase their machines, including a shingle mill and other belt-driven implements.  All of this will be framed with the museum’s own steam locomotive, which will give rides on the museum grounds to guests throughout the event. This special event will prove to be a fun and exciting experience for those who want to get a taste of the classic Norman Rockwell era of American leisure and life.

The singers in Lock 4 are all members of the Akron Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS).
 
 

*The grounds showcasing the tractors, implements, and base ball games are free access during this event. Train rides are $6 per person for each ride, and tours are regular tour prices.

Purchase Tickets
The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum’s unique Yard Tours allow guests to view many of the pieces of railroad equipment in the museum collection that are normally not accessible to our standard, walking tours. Along with this prospect, guests on our Yard Tours can look forward to viewing the equipment from within a moving passenger car. For the yard portion of the tour, a diesel locomotive will transport guests around in one of our historic passenger cars, with a guide on board to explain the history of the equipment outside. The second portion of the tour the consist will be positioned on the museum’s turntable so guests can disembark and be led along the radial tracks around the turntable. The radial tracks house many of the museum’s diesel locomotives along with other select pieces of equipment. We invite you to participate in this unique experience at the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum and hope to see you on the tour!

Join us for a day welcoming youth to experience vehicles of all sizes and shapes in ways they likely haven’t before. Police, fire, and other emergency vehicles will be joined by semi-tractors, farm tractors, and everything in between. We have an eclectic list of equipment from local businesses and organizations.  See the list below for the current participants.  The object of Touch a Truck/Touch a Train is to allow young people to climb in and out of and look at the controls of as many different vehicles and pieces of equipment as possible.

You are invited to hop into one of the many different track cars, commonly known as “speeders”, that will depart from the museum visitor center platform and run through our sprawling rail yard.

We will still be running tours during our normal time slots on both days, and our Youth Tour of the Roundhouse is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

Come out for this special weekend and experience the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum as you’ve never experienced it before!

Ride tickets are available for a $4 donation at the services counter on the day of the event.  Tickets for roundhouse tours can be purchased at the counter during the event or on our website.

You do not need to purchase a tour ticket to attend the event.

There are no online tickets for the railcars.
Railcar ride tickets must be purchased at the depot the day of the event.

Tickets may be refunded for cancellations up to 24 hours before a scheduled tour or event begins.  The processing fee, or any other incurred charges, will not be refunded.  No refunds will be given within 24 hours of, or after, the ticketed tour or event start time.
